About AASU

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

The Asian American Student Union (AASU) is a Pan-Asian organization that aims to unite the Asian American community by holding educational workshops and social events to endorse solidarity, networking and community among students. We are an Asian Interest Organization, but we are not Asian Exclusive. With the growing population of Asian American students at UW-Madison, it is important for us to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for discussion and support.

Our Story

Madison Asian Union was established in 1970 by Jack T. Chen in response to the Vietnam War, Black Power Movement, and to provide a community for Asians fighting racism against Asians/Pacific Islanders. AASU is one of five organizations that founded the UW-Madison Multicultural Student Center (MSC). Our mission statement is to: “provide an academic and social platform for UW-Madison students to discuss and promote issues within the Asian-American community.” AASU helped establish the FIRST Asian-American Studies Program in the Midwest. The award-winning FamBam program was founded in 2016 by Carmen Yang.

Hello everybody! I'm Max and I'm a co-president for AASU this year! In my free time, I love doing homework and studying for exams. I also love taking road trips, visiting random places, and hanging with my friends. Fun fact: my roommates and I are planning on getting a ping-pong table to use as our dining table.
